Starting Your Career in a Tech Scale-up: Why This is a Great Idea!
I have always believed that working for a fast-growing tech company is a great idea. I started my career about 5,5 years ago at a tech scale in Amsterdam where I was fortunate enough to experience tremendous growth both in terms of the company itself and my own professional development. In October 2020, I joined Mollie on their mission of becoming the most loved European Payment Service Provider, and what a ride it has been! This exciting journey has taught me a lot already and, in this article, I would like to share with you the key reasons why you should give your career at a tech scale-up a try.
It’s a rocketship: be ready to make an impact
Tech-scale ups are known for their constant growth and ever-changing environment. Nothing stands still. Compare it to a “rocketship”, where the aerodynamics still needs to be designed. And on the go :) You are encouraged to spot opportunities for improvement and act on them. Everybody is really open to change and asking how we can grow faster, work smarter, and more efficiently. On their quest for never-ending optimization, tech scale-ups are looking for people who can get things done. In exchange, they offer fast learning trajectories and career growth.
No matter what gets you going one thing is sure: You will make an impact. Be it closing sales deals, new product development, or optimization of processes you will see your fair share of influence on the company’s growth. When you are in the rocketship everything moves at lightning speed. Time simply flies, a month can sometimes feel like a year. Both in terms of impact and growth. When I joined Mollie, many people who had been working there for 2 years were already considering themselves ‘ dinosaurs’ ;).
It’s a great beginning for your career

I applied this mindset in my first job already and it allowed me to switch roles, and face new challenges within the company. Last, but definitely not least — I love the tech scale-up vibe and the people it attracts! It’s not only about fun Slack channels, a pingpong table in the canteen, or doing virtual vrijmibo ‘Bingo’s’.
